Lab Twelve: Phylum Arthropoda

Phthirus pubis (= crab or pubic louse) is a parasitic insect (O. Anoplura) infecting humans.

Pediculus humanus corporis (left) and Pediculus humanus capitis (right) are parasitic insects (O. Anoplura) infecting humans.

Amblyomma americanum, the lonestar tick, is a parasitic arachnid (O. Ixiodida) that transmits Rocky Mountain Spotted fever.

Dermacentor variabilis, the American dog tick, is a parasitic arachnid (O. Ixiodida) that transmits Rocky Mountain Spotted fever.

Pulex irritans, the human flea, is a parasitic insect (O. Siphonaptera) that transmits plague.

Sarcoptes scabiei, the itch mite, is a parasitic arachnid (O. Astigmata) that causes sarcoptic mange, or scabies.
